Newcastle Airport Runway Scheme

Supporting the scheme with a Topographical Survey, Setting Out, Surfacing Checks, and Modelling works.

We are proud to be playing a key role in the ongoing £17 million runway resurfacing project at Newcastle International Airport. The scheme is a major project designed to extend the lifespan of one of the UK’s busiest regional airport runways. This involves the resurfacing of a 2,329-metre-long runway, with work taking place during overnight closures to minimise disruption to flight schedules.

Our engagement in this important project began in August 2024 when we were commissioned to conduct a comprehensive Topographical Survey. This initial survey provided essential data for the planning and execution of the resurfacing works.

Recognising our deep knowledge of Machine Control and heavy civil projects, we were then entrusted with supporting the broader rehabilitation efforts.

Since the commencement of work in early November 2024, the project has been progressing at a rapid pace. Our surveyors have been at the forefront of the project, performing key tasks including setting out, assessing checks, and 3D modelling. Each of these tasks has been followed by precise Asbuilt Surveys, ensuring compliance with the highest industry standards and guaranteeing the project meets its rigorous specifications.

Remaining efficient Under Pressure

Efficiency was paramount for this project, as all resurfacing work had to be completed between the last flight departure at night and the first arrival in the morning. Our dedicated team of surveyors worked tirelessly through the night, ensuring every task was executed within these tight timeframes. While a team of over 100 operatives, supported by heavy plant machinery, meticulously dug up, levelled, resurfaced, and painted meters of runway each night to ensure it was ready for use by 6 AM, our surveyors provided the precise data and checks required to guide these operations.

The precision and speed required for this operation were made possible by our our skilled team and quality equipment. To maintain the highest levels of accuracy, the scheme was powered by state-of-the-art equipment supplied by Tri-Site, with Topcon’s smooth ride system for Machine Control. This allowed seamless transitions between work phases despite the challenging time restraints.

Supporting Newcastle Airport’s Growth and Infrastructure

This work is all part of Newcastle International Airport’s Masterplan. This redevelopment scheme aims for long-term growth, ensuring the airport remains a key gateway for passengers and cargo. A critical aspect of this plan is enhancing airside infrastructure to accommodate increasing air traffic and larger, more fuel-efficient aircraft. The runway resurfacing is a foundational step in ensuring the airport meets stringent safety and performance requirements while preparing for future expansion.

As a surveying company, it is incredibly rewarding to be one of the first steps in a project of this scale, knowing that our expertise contributes to a project that will eventually make the North more connected, create jobs, and heighten travel opportunities for the region.

As the project progresses towards completion, we remain dedicated to ensuring that every aspect of our work meets the highest standards. We look forward to seeing Newcastle International Airport benefit from this upgrade for years to come.
