Showcasing Careers in Construction

Give Construction A Try

Last week we were proud to participate in the Give Construction a Try (GCAT) event at Castleford College, an initiative bringing together industry and education partners to inform young people about opportunities available in the construction sector.

The annual event aims to give students an insight into careers in construction they may not have known about and address the industry’s current skills gap. Over 100 pupils from the Wakefield district attended, engaging in interactive workshops covering key trades such as bricklaying, carpentry & joinery, electrical work, plumbing, and land surveying. Students also learnt about the emerging technology shaping the future of construction.

Surveying Equipment

We enjoyed engaging with students, discussing career opportunities in surveying and showcasing the vital role of modern technology in construction. We have recently partnered with Tri-site to offer high-quality surveying equipment sales and hire, so it was a great opportunity to demonstrate how their innovative surveying equipment streamlines and improves our working process.

For instance, we showed how the X500 drone‘s cutting-edge technology, including its precise positioning, stability, obstacle detection, and ability to operate in areas with limited GPS, all while providing real-time views for surveying large structures.

We also introduced the AlphaAir 10 (AA10) to students as an example of advanced UAV technology. With precise navigation, long-range scanning, and real-time data visualisation, the AA10 captures detailed point clouds and 3D models. It is exciting to show how far our industry has come in terms of technology and it was great to see students taking an interest .

Opportunities in Our Industry

Events like Give Construction a Try are key to bridging the gap between education and industry. It was inspiring to see so many companies in our industry coming together to raise awareness of the rewarding careers available in construction to inspire the next generation of professionals.

This links to our recent launch of our Pathway to Surveying initiative- a specialist, industry-focused route into surveying. By combining hands-on experience with professional training and recognised qualifications, the programme allows aspiring surveyors to gain the skills and knowledge needed for a successful career. We’re looking forward to seeing how our new trainee surveyors develop and grow within the industry.
